Rome
Rome developed through technological and architectual advances. Rome started out as a republic, located on the southern coasts of Italy. While it was originally a small city, it grew to be one of the largest empires the world has ever seen. Rome went on to conquer Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, North Africa, and a large portion of Europe. When they conquered these cities, the Romans passed on their ideas, culture, and traditions to them.
Within the Roman civilization there were social classes. Patricians were at the top, they were the wealthy landowners. The patricians used slavery to take care of their debts, and to work on their land. Typically, these slaves were the plebeians, who were the poor, dark-skinned people at the bottom of the social class. Slaves were debtors, who were forced to work for wealthy landowners to repay their debts. Another type of slave was the war captive, which were plentiful when the Roman legions went off to the Punic wars. The Punic wars were three wars fought between Carthage and Rome for the control of the western Mediterranean Sea.
The Roman Republic lasted from 509-27 B.C. It was comprised of three main elements, a system of magistrates, a senate, and multiple popular assemblies. The Romans also had tribunes to represent the people, who were elected by popular vote. During this time, Julius Caesar came to power. Julius Caesar was a powerful dictator, who was very charismatic. Julius Caesar said, "I love the name of honor, more than I fear death," which shows his love for power, which allowed him to create the first Roman Empire. Therfore, Julius Caesar was the first Roman emperor. He was a genius, but he had enemies. On the Ides of March, during a supposed senate meeting, Julius Caesar was murdered by Brutus, one of his close acquaintances. His last words were, "e tu, Brute, e tu?," which means, "you too Brutus, you too?"
Julius Caesar was a bad emperor. The difference between a good and bad emperor is that good emperors would listen to their people, and take their thoughts into account when creating laws. A bad emperor would do only what they wanted, and would act like a tyrant. Bad emperors were power hungry.
One of the most popular forms of entertainment around this time was the going to the Roman coliseum, which was the modern day stadium. The Coliseum had spectator seats, and you could see plays, fights, and other entertaining things of that sort. Another innovative idea was the aqueducts. The aqueducts carried water throughout the empire, and allowed for cleaner, more efficient water distribution.
In conclusion, the Roman empire was one of the most advanced, powerful empires in the world. They created ideas that are still used in the modern day, and created technology and archeological discoveries that are the precursors to todays skyscrapers, mail system, computers, and bridges. The Romans were some of the most effective, and brilliant people in the world.
